Our Members Work

Welcome to our Member Showcase where we highlight a few of our members and their work. Our members have different skill levels and express their woodworking creativity in different ways. Here you will see samples of what our members work on.

Leo Claessens

Leo started his toolmaking apprenticeship in the Netherlands at the age of 15.  After becoming a journey man, He immigrated to Canada where he worked as a toolmaker/millwright until retirement.

About ten years before retirement, he started woodworking on the weekends and now, in retirement, it has expanded to five or six days a week.  He has added knife making, leather goods and toolmaking to his repertoire.

Knowing the importance of good tools, most of his woodworking is done with high quality hand tools, often ones self made.

Leo only uses domestic and exotic hard woods in his work.  This includes sides and backs of all cabinets. Bottoms of cabinet drawers are also made of solid hard wood.  Spoons and other small items are made from highly figured wood including exotic wood species.

Scott Davies

Scott started wood working as a “young guy” and  has been a club member for 13 years. He has volunteered as a Coordinator for 12 years, and served on the Board for eight of those years.

He enjoys all areas of woodworking including carving, making furniture, woodburning and incorporating laser images and epoxy into his works.

Scott greatly values that the Club allows members to learn new skills from fellow members allowing  them to enhance their personal skills.

A graduate from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Andrew worked in the Visual Arts field before establishing his own custom furniture business in 1970. He showed his pieces in galleries across Ontario and upstate New York.

In 1973 Andrew founded A & M Wood Specialty Inc., providers of fine hardwoods and veneers for custom furniture, musical instruments and architectural millwork.

When Andrew sold A & M Wood Specialty Inc., he returned to his passion for design and construction of fine furniture and art objects. Since then his pieces have been shown in galleries in southwestern Ontario.

Many of our members have benefited from Andrews advice and guidance, allowing them to grow their skills.
